I've used Ready Strip and similar paint strippers many times. They work pretty well, but it's always a messy job, and they only do part of the job for you.

You brush on the stripper, wait a few minutes, and then you can scrape the loosened paint off with a putty knife or similar wide-bladed scraper. It's best to work outside, if possible, because the paint strippers contain solvents that smell bad and the fumes can make you woozy.
