You could rephrase the statement to say " Markets do not exist until they are created". Customers feed the market but cannot anticipate what they need until they either develop a need for a certain product to answer that need or see a product that they now have a need for .

Look at something like the IPOD. Customers indicate that they want portable music in a convenient form that is also easy to use. That is the potential market. Apple sees the need and invents the IPOD to fill it. The customers who wanted the portable music now have an option and buy it. Other customers see the product and how other people use decide they now have a need and buy it too.

Before the IPOD there was a need that became a market once the product to fill that need comes out. a market is created.
