The NJ tint laws are no tint on the front windows at all, but you can go as dark as you want on the back windows given that you have 2 side mirrors, very similar to CA laws. The lightest possible tint while still giving great UV protection is 70-75% but it is not visibly much darker than the stock windows coloring. All of my cars have 55% front and 5% rear. With the back so dark, the front being slightly tinted you can't tell at all.

If you are concerned with tinting I'd do 70% on the front which will give you a significant heat reduction(for llumar film it is 25%) as well as 99% UV reduction, then do however dark you want in the back. I have NEVER heard of anyone getting hassled with 70% on the front and it will not only help keep the car cooler, but will protect your interior as well.

As far as brands I prefer Llumar, Solarguard, Sunguard, or 3m. Make sure they give you a lifetime warranty in case there are any problems with the tint down the road.

Here's a cute site that has a demo of tinting darkness, although the 70% isn't quite as dark as they show it. http://www.tintmyride.ca/tint_demo.htm
