Sometimes when I put my cell phone near some speakers there is a clicky, static noise that goes dita-dita-dit. My friend said it means that you are getting a text or a call, but I never usually do after I hear it. What does it actually mean?

The phone sends out a locator pulse to the network ( to stay connected) it just interferes with the speakers slightly

It means you have a GSM phone (Cingular, T-Moble) and not a CDMA phone (Verizon, Spring, Alltel, US Cellular, etc) GSM uses an older, primitive method of encoding digital data called TDMA. Data from the phone including voice, text messages and just keeping in contact with the tower is sent as burst of data packets which splatter across the radio spectrum interfering with other devices.
