Yesterday, my Mom was driving at about 60 mph when when heard a "pop", then the car shut down. When I went to get her, I looked under the hood for a sec, and tried to crank it. Starter spins fine, and turns the alternator, but the car doesn't try to turn over. Timing belt doesn't turn. Have had some suggest that it may be the cam sprocket that broke. Need any suggestions as to possibilities and, if known with suggesstions, what kind of repair costs could be expected. Also have been told that if timing system broke at 60 mph, more than likely valves are bent.

You usually can't see the timing belt, since it is covered to protect it.

If the main cranks and the main engine pulley turns, then the engine is not an interference type. If it was, the engine would not crank.

If the oil fill cap is on top of the engine, take it off and look in there. If you can see the cams or valves, crank it and see if they move. If not, broken belt.

The timing belt is broken. It will cost about $200. Most auto supply stores can tell you if that engine is an interference engine (meaning that that pistons could hit the valves when the belt breaks)
You engine is tuning over , it just not firing bcause the timing belt is not turning the camshaft.
