I'm a Toro guy.

Be aware that most equipment manufacturers make 2 grades of products. There is a quality stuff that carries a higher price tag and can be found at "specialty" stores, then there is the lower price equipment that you find at the big box stores (Home Depot).

Take Toro for example. You can go to Home Depot/Lowes and find a mower that costs around $200 that seems to be identical to the mower you find at the Toro authorized sales/service dealer, but this other mower costs like $350+.

The lower price model is using a lesser quality engine and engine parts (carburetor), lesser quality materials in the mower deck etc.. You'll also notice that it comes with a shorter warranty.

I take good care of my equipment, following the maintenance schedule in the owners manual. I used to figure that if it was taken care of, any piece of machinery would last virtually for ever. I falsely assumed that the reason Home Depot/Lowes had better prices was volume.

I had one of those Home Depot Toro mowers, funny thing it lasted just as long as the warranty, when I took to the "authorized service center" they wanted $200 to basically rebuild the whole thing - in other words they are disposable.

This is true of Toro and Honda, probably John Deere and Cub Cadet too.

I ended up buying the higher end unit, and so far so good. Runs great.

Reason I like Toro - the self pace drive system. You push on the handle and the mower drives itself at the speed your walking. Stop walking, it stops. No messing with any controls on the handle like a Honda.

I went with a DR power mower (electric/battery) in 2000,
and haven't been sorry a day since. . .
the unit requires a new battery cell, about every year, for around $80, and I've had the blade sharpened twice.
It's a neat little, quiet, eco friendly unit . . .

Honda hands down. Push or rider they are the very best. I have a rider and if you want something that all you need to do is put gas in it, then Honda is what you want. Extremely reliable, and very easy starting.

I would buy a Craftsman (Red 4 sure) get the one with a vaccum so you can just empty the grass out in the trash can.

I really think Cub Cadet is the best brand.
Ours has lasted us over 9 years with very little trouble.
