If you truly insist to go at it on your own, there are a couple of things to always look for in an edit:
1) Do you have a strong, supportable thesis statement that answers the question your teacher poses?
2) Do you have at least three SUPPORTING pieces of evidence in your paper - this means SPECIFIC examples (quotes are always best) - one per paragraph.
3) Does you paper flow? Your ideas should go easily from one idea to the next using transition words like "likewise" and "in the same way" and "although". You should also make sure your sentence length varies and that you do not use the same word to start sentences.
4) Use grammar/spell check on your computer, but read it over again anyway (it won't correct the WRONG word if it is spelled correcly - "they're" vs "their")
5) Read it outloud once through. Your brain will skip over mistakes if you read it in your head, but when you hear it outloud, you can often catch flow or grammar errors.

You may not like to share your work, but the reality is that having someone else proofread for you is 100 times better than going at it yourself.

I would suggest getting a tutor. To help you with this one.

I did not go to college, I went to business school, so for this question, I would advise going to someone who has "been there, and done that".
