The best economical vacation, the best place to spend time together and enjoy mother nature:::::::YELLOWSTONE!!!!!!!
You can't beat it. There are hotels surrounding the park, there are KOA"s (which we stayed in twice in West Yellowstone) The neat thing about KOA's are they have cabins you can rent from nothing but beds to heaters, to family cabins with all the comforts. The campgrounds have pools (heated indoor) BB courts, rentable mini bikes, and you can even buy meals there if you want. The park itself is beautiful. We saw eagles, grey wolves, bison, deer, antelope. My kids thoroughly enjoyed it both times we went, and all 3 would go back now, even though they are 20, 18, and 16. So, tha't my suggesiton

I'm not sure where you from we live in Virginia and have taken many family trips with our now three year old ( and one on the way :-)
we take alot of MIni weekend trips to places close by 1-4 hours away such as Virgina beach where we spend hours on the beach and also at the first landings state park, we visited Williamsburg and Jamestownhe didn't understand a great deal of the history behind these places but we still had a great time exploring and learning together. Washington D.c our first trip there he was 4 months and managed to stay awake for 5 hours while we walked the museums and "mall", we also visited the zoo and aquarium and before going home we stopped at the potomic mills outlet mall ( my favorite place to shop!)
Lancaster PA... it's layed back and you can enjoy things at a layed back pace. the sights and sounds threater is a great place that our son really enjoyed the also have "A DAY OUT WITH THOMAS" our son loved riding "THOMAS" and not far from there is Hershey Pa. go visit Chocolate World!! they have a free museum and a theme park.
Our favorite family Vacation is to Gatlinburg Tn. The Great Smokey Mountains we've visited every year for 7 years , last year we went twice! of course there is the mountains, with kids a picnic , or a cook out or a hike up to clingmens dome is fun. back in gatlinburg there is so much to do our favorites include the Ripley's aquarium, skylift, hillybilly golf on down in pigeon Forge there is the Comedy barn ( which our son insists on going to every trip!) dixie stampede, dollywood and water park, and too many more to list... we've also found a trip to Orlando Florida alot of fun but for little ones ( 1-4 yrs) it can be a little over whelming universal studios and island of adventure is worth your time, they are two parks side by side you get a super discount when you visit both our son loved Suess Landing at Island of adventure, he was also tall enough ot ride almost all of the rides in Feb. of this year. and lasts but not least we visited the Fort Myers Florida area there we went to everglades city and petted alligators and rode air boats seen a panther!, visited Englewood beach and watched dolphines jump at sunset and found over 40 shark teeth!
sorry this has been so long .. I guess I should sum it up by saying you can take your kids almost anywhere as long as your spending quality time as a family they (and you) will be happy. my only suggestion would be start by takeing day or weekend getaways first before you take a much longer trip. relax and have a great time !

Depends on where you are located, but if Wisconsin is an option, I would definitely do "Wisconsin Dells". They are the water park capital of the world and tons of other things to do. Baraboo, close by, has Circus World Mueseum. There is also "The House On the Rock". Kewl and Cheap vacation for a family.

Disneyworld or Disneyland. I've been to Disneyworld twice and it's a great place for children. There is also many places around Disney that are fun. They have the Ripley's Believe or Not Museum, Lots of Go-Karts and theres also Universal.

aquariums, museums are always air condition, and have bathrooms. Look up historical sites where ever, and make a scavenger hunt out of them. I don't like to do alot when the kids r small cause u never know when u have to re arrange the schedule and still b in a good mood
