1. how can i tell when to use flange in water pipings?
2. what are the usual pipes used in a sewerage system(subdivisions/land developments) and how can i size it? is it the same when i am designing sewer system in a building?

USA Flanges are used in high pressure water systems, and in systems where the piping is larger than 3" diameter, usually ductile or copper piping. Flanges are often used at fittings and for equipment installations, to provide for easy removal / replacement of parts.

Sewage system design for subdivisions and land developments is done by a licensed engineer. If you are not an engineer, do not attempt to design a system. It is a lot different than a system for one building.

Flanges in water systems are usually in ductile systems. For city water dept. work.

Also in large systems. like the one I worked on at Intel in Albuquerque. Actually Rio Rancho..

Around here, sewage is being install with pvc-dwv. Up to 8" pipe that I know of.
