The Purple Martin (Progne subis) is the largest North American swallow at 20 cm length. Adults have a slightly forked tail. These "aerial acrobats" have speed and agility in flight, and when approaching their housing, will dive from the sky with their wings tucked at great speeds.

it is a bird. They go back every year pretty much to the exact same birdhouses they were born in ! They mate for life, so it is a cruel thing to use them for target practice. Wherever you see white birdhouses, with a red roof, that's where you will find purple martin's. For some reason, they are attracted to these!........it was interesting to read that they are native to Michigan. They come down here to vacation in Texas !
