E = mc2 arises from a classical theory. Splitting the atom requires a quantum theory.

Einstein had nothing at all to do with nuclear energy.

NO first it was assumed that the total mass and energy of the universe were diffrent and constant but e=mc^2 converted mass to energy and vica-verse thus making energy, mass as same quantities. Still many scientists have doubt if this eq. is correct, it recently proved wrong, but soon it got corrected too.
