Apple uses the "media is stupid" principle.
Apple's iPhone is such a late comer to the touch screen phone market it is an embarrasment, however the media are so stupid they don't realise this.
This worked with the iPod and with Google. The media is so desperate to appear tech savy they learn something from the marketing department of Apple or another company and repeat it. Most media people probably didn't know what MP3 was until Steve Jobs explained it to them, so they immediately associated it with iPod.
Their marketing strategy is to get to people through the mainstream media, mainly heading for those people who like technology and don't know how to use. They can sell the idea that their technology is easier to use (even if it isn't, as long as customers think it is, then it sells).
