They lack confidence in their own ability to provide good government for the people. Then, they lie to stay in power. The old adage about you can fool some of the people all the time, all the people some of the time but you can't fool all the people all the time is coming home to beat Blair's government into submission. And not before time if that ghastly Brown leads the present government. He's gross as a chancellor, imagine the state of play if he becomes PM.

The reasons politicians lie is because the public doesn't want to hear the truth. People want to hear what they want to hear. When two candidates are running and one of the tells the truth and the other says what the public wants to hear, the one who says what the public wants to hear wins the election. Thus, and there are exceptions to this, if you want to win an election, you better start lying, because the guy who's telling you the truth doesn't have a chance. !!!!!!!

Politicians are in the business of getting elected, and telling the truth doesn't help in that respect. Senior citizens don't want to hear that there isn't enough money to fund government subsidized prescriptions, and the population in general doesn't want to pay higher taxes to fund it. (People often feel it's OK to tax the other guy, but not them.) It is easier to try to please everyone than to tell the truth about not being able to fund programs that might affect a certain group.
It seems that many in our country want to have their cake and eat it too, so to speak. Many are not willing to do for themselves, and want Uncle Sam to take care of them. Politicians simply play to this aspect, and are afraid that telling the truth about things would hurt their electability. No one wants to take the listen to how there is no money for a program that THEY want or feel that they need. It is just too bitter a pill to swallow.

Some compromise so much it looks like a lie.. others like Clinton thought he was telling the truth all the time. I forgot the technical name for it but its a psychological disease in your brain.. I know a lot of people like that its just not a politicians malady.
ps. I remembered the name a pathological liar.

Politicians, for the most part, do tell the truth.
They just say it in such a complicated and round-a-bout way that they let you think you're hearing them say something they're not, and you need a lawyer to decipher what the reality is.
Thats why its such a big thing when they have been found to have been lying for everyone in politics, while we normal bods laugh at the idea they dont do it all the time.

"You were informed of the answer to your question re: "Why Politicians do not tell the truth" By no less a dignitary than that lovable "Little Meddling Tinker 'Tony Blair' {our glorious Prime Minister}
When he recently appeared in a 'Sketch' on a Television 'Charity' show in Aid of 'Comic Relief' {Red Nose Day}: In this Sketch he repeatedly & alternately uttered two well known 'Catch-Phrases':- "AM I BOTHERED"?---"DO I LOOK BOTHERED"?
"Once elected Politicians could not give a Damn about the 'Hoi-Polloi' who actually voted for them!!

Because no-one wants to hear the truth. It's easier to believe the lies and the spin. Politicians want to get elected and so they tell people want they want to hear.

Because 'the truth' to a politician is whatever explanation will gain him or his party the most browny points. Aka scouts honour.

because they are capable of lying, deceiving and abusing the public's trust. they lie because they think that because they hold such high positions in government, to them it assumes that they can do as they please when they want and as they want. the truth is that they don't give a toss about us. they don't listen, they hardly do. if that was the case britain wouldn't be in such a dire state that it is in right now
