I'm afraid it's impossible to do more than guess what it could be, first because we don't know the geographical location, and second because you don't give many details.

If the head was relatively small, it was probably a colubrid snake.

Now please don't assume that colubrids are not dangerous; many of them have venom and even if they don't, they can be aggressive and bite.
Unless you are planning to take it to an expert for identification, please consider releasing it back to the wild (preferably in an area far from humans, so it can go on with its life). Thanks :-)

It really depends on where you live. Brown Snakes are small brown or gray snakes often found around yards and vacant lots. Average adult size is in the range of 9 to 13 inches. They eat slugs, earthworms, and soft-bodied insects. They are live bearing (that is, the female retains the eggs within her body until time to hatch.)

Where do you live? at least help us out that much. It's like saying "I saw a blue car the other day, what kind was it?"

Your best bet for this and future situations would be to go get yourself a field guide to your local snakes. When you've seen one, you're bound to see more, and having a field guide handy may save your life if you're one of those people who picks up snakes regardless of whether your know what kind it is or not.

I doubt it became a toxic snake, or perhaps poisonous snakes prefer to be left on my own and to depart people on my own. From what you describe, it became probable a water or milk snake.

The only thing I know is: If it has a diamond shaped head, it is poisonous, rounded shaped head, it is not.
