Firstly, you say 40 gigs, I guess that's your hard drive, but the important thing for G. Earth to work is ram, which should be over 500 megs. There are other factors as well, the best thing is to check the Google Earth download site and make sure that your machine is up to the program requirements.
Then, and this is something I have encountered a few times, make sure that at the initialisation phase the system does indeed 'see' that you are online, and does make the connection. It has a sneaky little habit of looking like it has connected, but not doing so. The best thing to check is to go to 'file', drop down and select 'server log out', wait a few seconds and then 'file' and 'server log in'.
Then, when you select a site look for the 'Streaming' icon center bottom of your screen and make sure that it is indeed streaming and producing gradually clearer images as it does so.
Finally remember that they are still working on the overall image availability and that depending on where you are looking the final quality can vary tremendously. Where I live a can hardly make out my house, yet a few hundred metres away I can see what people had for breakfast.
Hope this helps.

I have Google Earth on my laptop and it works fine. But sometimes when I go somewhere it gets all blurry. I think it is because satilights are taking the photos up in space and sending them to Google Earth. Some places they are taking photos of every minute, such as war areas Etc.. and some places they are taking photos Every 3 years. so some areas are more blurry than others.
P.S. Go to the sightseeing folder are go on that tour. It is soooo cool! Your can get up close to Famous Places.

Interesting. Works fine for me - always has. Perhaps your GPU could be the problem? Just a guess, really.
