I am terrified of appearing dumb because I'm tongue tied or nervous. How do I get people to listen and take me seriously?

Know your material well.....and realize that the group you're talking to isn't there to burn you at the stake. If you goof, just start that sentence over say "excuse me" and start again. Most errors occur when people try to speed through a speaking engagement. Take your time, and actually pause after each sentence and comma. Don't be afraid to smile as you introduce your lecture. If there's any clever line in it, a smile would help there too. |The main thing is to take your time....it's not a race.

First of all, I think you should be well-read in your field and related issues so that the process will keep you well-prepared and thus, over time, you will definitely acquire more confidence. I also learned from some good professors who had his/her own way of a brief warming-up session such as a good quote related to the topic you are going to lecture, or an interesting incident from newspapers, etc. I think it is a bit difficult at the beginning of your lecture so you needs practicing as well as advanced preparation (lesson plan) for each session in a notebook. From my experience, it took me around 5 years+ to be confident and eloquent. As for the intelligent topic, I think, it depends on your well-informed knowledge + understanding + unusual insight + sense of humor + etc. Therefore, it is wise to learn from your great professors.

Prepare well all the materials you are going to lecture, and prepare your mental by meditate (take a deep breath in and out) and you will find out that you will be relax and everything is going to be fine. People can feel if you are calm, then they will feel calm too. When you are calm, then you have your confident and concentrate what you are going to lecture. The rest you can just imagine like you talk to your friends.

Be sure to make a joke at the beginning of the lecture. It will un tense the air.
And make eye contact to the listeners.
Good luck!
