well, i would say as far as possible wouldn't you? i think the veggies should be completely separated by some sort of fence otherwise how are you going to know if there has been any clandestine leg cocking going on while your not looking.the area that they use should be very regularly cleaned too.

At least twenty feet away, and bury or scoop it every night. Bugs love poop and will land on it and then go land on your vegetables with their poopy little feet. Be careful to wash your veggies clean, too.

it doesnt matter as long as he doesnt dig up the garden belive it or not farmers have been using animal zhit 4 many many years now

Some people use their dogs' crap as fertilizer, so I wouldn't worry about it.
