The Philippines is a fairly dangerous place for a number of reasons.

1. Terrorism. Muslim separists in the south like to blow up things in Manila while communist rebels in the mountains in the north like to shoot people and take hostages.

2. Crime. Lots of poor people and high gun ownership (mostly illegal) means there is a lot of petty and violent crime. Banks usually have a guard out the front with a shotgun at the ready and another inside. Hotel Manila has guards with AK-47s patrolling the grounds.

4. Organised crime. Don't offend people driving big black expensive cars. Even if you live in a compound protected by security guards, they don't stop the local mafia coming in.

5. Poor safety standards. It is a developing country, so there are high rates of car accidents.

However I love the Phils, people are friendly, and always smiling. Everyone speaks English and many people have great English. Friends will give up their bed for if you are guest in their home.

I would recommend 2 places to study. Bagiou, in the mountains. The weather is cooler, it is a traditional resort area.

The other is Manila, but maybe you won't be so comfortable.

The main thing is to get to know people, make friends and have fun.

The Philippines is fairly safe depending on where you reside. Everywhere in the south of Metro Manila (Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Laguna, Cavite), there are already established communities of people who study English (mostly Korean nationals). Security is better in those areas than anywhere else in the Island, there are a lot of guards in schools and in exclusive villages where the communities are. Unfortunately, I don't have an exact figure of how much it will cost montly because the prices of house rental, village association fees, car rental, and tuition for schooling can either be really cheap or less affordable depending on how much you're willing to spend. There are so many to chose from.

my apologies if my English is hard to understand.
