Aren't Turks... European?? It's been my observation that generally, Turkish men do not consider women to be their equals....so if you're a self-respecting woman....you won't date Turks...

Firstly, no Turkey is not part of Europe (and has a unique culture), and secondly - hey! What a generalisation about not dating Turkish men.

I'm British and married to a Turkish man, and I would be the first to admit that we don't share a common culture. This has needed some working through at times. But it's impossible to sum up any 'rules' in a short post.

Mostly, it's about being aware that there will be misunderstandings, groundrules to be negotiated, and remembering that if you abandon your own culture to adapt to someone else's, you may find that it causes resentment further down the line.

By all means, compromise on the small stuff, and make sure you discuss the big stuff. It's common for some Turkish men to have fixed ideas about acceptable behaviour - but you don't have to agree to it. One person should not 'swamp' the other, to the point where you lose something of your identity.

I could talk about lots of cultural 'quirks', but it would be a generalisation and it could lead you to hook on to things that aren't relevant in your relationship.

You could find some more info on www.egotm.com , which is English Girlfriends of Turkish Men.

I am Muslim also have very very many turkish friends male and female!
It is all down to the cultures of the people, turkish men are very loving towards their spouse and at the same time very protective, if he shows a little jealousy this doesnt mean its a negative thing, i confronted a friend of mine about this once and he just said to me, english men are in general more liberal and open about their women, they dont worry where they are what they are doing and who they are with most of the time, where as we do because we simply care.
Maybe it makes sense maybe it doesnt, but the cultures are different simple!
More communication between different cultures can go a long way and help build bridges of understanding between each culture instead of constantly comparing one to the other!
