I say both, and I'm British.
I dont know why.

It doesn't matter either way, the real word is mathematics, not math or maths.

You could argue both are correct.

"Maths" could be considered correct because the true word is "mathematicS" and not "mathematic".

"Math" could be considered correct because its more a true shortening of the word.

Either way, it doesn't matter, and I would venture to suggest it far more because of tradition than anything else.

Why do they call cell phones mobiles in Australia?
Why do they spell colour in the UK and color in the US?
Why do they drive on the left side of the road in the UK, Australia, and NZ, but on the right side of the road in North America?
Why do they call it football in some parts of the world and soccer in other parts?

It's just the way it is; every country has their own way of doing things, and people grow up with these methods. It has nothing to do with being lazy or being American. It's about being aware of the world around you and accepting these cultural differences.

We say "math" because, when we abbreviate the word, we simply use the first syllable. The meaning is more stressed when abbreviated in British English.

Because they know best!! They are superpower and no one can stop them!! Alquaida tried and failed. Iraqis are tying but failing!! Iranians have already challenged them to attack but sanctions will do the trick!! That is how Americans are powerful!!

Incidentally, they don't speak English so it is incomparable!!
