Perfume oil is necessarily diluted with a solvent because undiluted oils (natural or synthetic) contain high concentrations of volatile components that will likely result in allergic reactions and possibly injury when applied directly to skin or clothing. The concentration by percent/volume of perfume oil is as follows:

Perfume extract: 20%-40% aromatic compounds
Eau de parfum: 10-30% aromatic compounds
Eau de toilette: 5-20% aromatic compounds
Eau de cologne: 2-5% aromatic compounds

As the percentage of aromatic compounds decreases, so does the intensity and longevity of the scent created.

There isn't a specific rule followed by everyone, and all perfumes are different. Also, they will react a little differently on different people, so you'll still have to do a lot of smell testing. Good luck!

All of them are fragrances. You have different grades of fragrances. Here they are in order from lightest to strongest (which is also from cheapest to most expensive) :

Eau de toillette: (toilet water) the lightest, a little stronger than a body spay. Not long lasting.

Eau de Cologne (colone water) : a bit stronger, longer lasting, but lighter than cologne.

Cologne: stronger, should last all day. 2nd in strength to perfume.

Perfume (parfum): the strongest, most concentrated strength. A little goes a long way, and lasts all day and into the night. ;)

Some women prefer to use several forms of the same freagrance, such as the above forms plus lotions, powders, creams. This is called layering your fragrance. But be careful - your fragrance may be overwhelming if you overdo it! Maybe use a cologne or eau de cologne, and carry a small perfume to touch up. Just placing a drop on the pulse points (neck, crease of elbow, wrist) will give you a lot of fragrance. Pay attention to the feedback from others, if they back away from you or compliment you. If men compliment you on your fragrance, you're doing something right!!

perfume is the strongest and most expensive of frangrances...and is the longest lasting.
eau de parfum is the next strong.
then..cologne..
then eau de toilette ( the least strong )
fragrance is a general term for any of the above.
the only difference is the use of alcohol in making fragrances...the less alcohol..the stronger the fragrance.
