Why do Americans walk naked in gym dressing rooms?

I'm Indian. Here in the gym dressing rooms people never expose themselves nude. They always wear a towel and carefully pull down their underwear from under. I went to America for a short duration. In the gym dressing rooms I was disgusted and offended to see men walking completely nude. Don't they feel self conscious? Don't straight men feel offended by that? Do women do the same in womens dressing rooms?

I'm a women and in school at gym class we had to strip nude and shower 4 to a stall and you know I felt ashamed. This still haunts me to this day because I was overweight and body was changing, faster than the others my age. But they make us do this, so you could just image the laugh, jokes they made of me. I feel the same way as you are describing to us.
It has been taught to us at a very young age so they think nothing of it. It's natural to them.
We all don't walk around naked, some of us do cover up just like you do and feel the same as you.
I'm from Canada and now in my forties and I can tell you they still do this kind of thing all over and not just in America.

We normally whip up on homosexuals in the locker rooms, so we're not too worried about any of them being in there with us checking us out. All of my buddies are straight, and I've nothing to be self-conscious about. They're not checking me out, and neither I, them.

I'm ex-military, so we had gang showers in there. I'm sure if you trust them enough with your life, you can trust them in the same shower.

If you want to toss a towel around you, that's ok. Nobody is going to look at you as being different. Some people are more bashful than others. And if someone wants to trot around the room el-naturel, we don't really care, we're not looking at them anyway.
