The creator had a very simple concept in mind when he made the movie but because of the way its presented and the issues it deals with, it becomes a very deep movie in my opinion.

the creator wanted to tell a story of how time travel works and what happens when you mess with time.

The philosophical points in the film deal with wright and wrong, god, time travel, alternate dimensions, self sacrifice, physiological disorders, modern medicine and many others.

I have had many discussions about this movie and everyone seems to draw something different from it. Take some time and think about the movie and you may find your own answer.

The director is very clear on this: Donnie Darko is about time travel. If you watch the extended director's cut that will become much more apparent.

Maybe schizophrenia awareness? Not all movies have a moral as such, some are just telling a story

I love the version of "Mad World" in that movie!
