All of us try to influence others--one way or another. Manipulation is usually considered negatively--and ofen is. But at the same time, it can be positive. To take a simplistic example, a sports coachoftnen use psychology to "pump up" his team to pudt forth their best effort.

Brainwashing--or indoctrination--is an entirely different matter. A manipulator--whatever his/her intentions--does no more than try to influence the choices others make. Brainwashing is a process of taking the power of choice away from the individual--of controlling their thought s and behavior so that they have no power of choice.

(And, to my way of thinking, is the worst crime imaginable. Even a filthy rapist leaves his victim the power to resent and resist, at least in her own mind)

I'm not going to get too technical but brainwashing is making somebody believe what you want them to believe by using brute force. Manipulation is subtle and not too obvious.
