My border terrier weighs 10.8 kg and should be 7.5kg. he gets lots of exercise. For the past year i have been feeding him Chappie dry food.

Having researched the net, I am going to feed him a fresh food diet of 60% meat, 30% oats, half carrot and a drop of sunflower oil as I think a natural diet is healthier.

I'm gradually changing over his food and daily calorific value will be 400 calories.

Could anyone with a border terrier let me know their feeding regime? And if this amount of calories will do the trick.

He only started putting on weight 3 months ago.

cheers!

I don't think counting calories is good for anybody, especially not a pet as their bodies and metabolisms are completely different from humans. If your serious about your dog loosing excess weight then i think you should take him to a vet and get a medical opinion. The internet is full of information and unfortunately, a great deal of it is incorrect, the best way to make a decision like this concerning your pet's health is to speak to a professional.
I dont' know about dogs but i know that when we're trying to fatten up our horses, one of the main components to their diet is oats, so im not sure wether it will have the same effect on your dog. There are plenty of natural, healthy products you can buy in the shops to feed your pooch that won't break your wallet.
I still urge you to take your dog to the vet before you decide to change his diet or lessen his food intake, a vet wil examine the dog and advise you in the best course of action to keep your dog healthy and help him loose weight.

Good Luck

There is nothing wrong with commercially prepared dry dog food as long as it meets the standards required for certification. It will say on the packet if it does. You are simply feeding your dog too much. Make a fist. Your dogs stomach is no bigger than that; probably half that size. Read the instructions and feed him the correct amount, no more. Maybe even a little less till he slims down. Don't think you are starving him. Until his ribs show when he is running, he is overweight.
