Ha! I think I have an answer for this... Depending on your religious beliefs this may not apply but I've finally thought of an answer that satifies me!

If God made Adam and Eve and they in term procreated then God must have made a similar sort of model for the chicken version of Adam and Eve, which then laid eggs. I don't think it says in the Bible that God made the eggs; he made the animals and then they, in turn, had babies. So, I believe the chicken came first!

And then, if you want to take it a step further, when there was a great flood Noah took 2 of each ANIMAL (not egg) onto his ark! So, again, the chicken then the egg.

It's a good question, I've actually had shouted arguments over this one.

I still say it was the damn chicken. Reason being - the chicken evolved from something else (don't know what) so the very first actual chicken came from an egg, sure, but it wasn't a chicken egg. So if the question is what came first, the chicken or the CHICKEN egg, the answer is the chicken.

On the other hand, I spose using that theory you could argue it was the egg first - you could say some weird pre-chicken creature laid the first egg, and the first chicken came out of it. Damn I'm getting wound up just typing this. Those I spose I shouldn't given that the point of the question it to be philosophically unanswerable!

The egg. Not the chickens egg though. Goes back to the start of life on Earth. Single cell organisms(THE EGG) formed from acid and proteins and gradually evolved over the millenia into higher forms of life This would have include all forms of bird life, which probably have evolved from flying lizards, and they propagated by laying eggs. Many other members of the animal kingdom also lay eggs, snakes, tortoises, insects, fish frogs etc. Other species became mammals whereby they gave birth to live young. All of life originates from the original single cell organism. So you could say "which came first ,man or the egg".

They recently solved this....
They being scientists ...

It was the egg.

Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.

Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

Hope it helps you
