First of all, herpes itself is not deadly. Oral herpes (also known as cold sores) usually type 1 can cause some serious secondary conditions, but they are VERY rare. For the most part it is just considered a rash. Type 2 is more common in the genitals, and has far less risk other than being annoying to some people.

Herpes is very contagious, and once you have it you can always spread it. You do not need to have an outbreak to spread the virus. 70% of those who are exposed are when their partner did not have any symptoms. 80-90% of the population has some form of herpes. If you have already been exposed, you cannot catch it again.

For the most part, you will not catch it by touching unless you have an open sore. If you do touch them, just wash your hands before sticking your hands in your mouth, eyes, or genitals. Hopefully, you do that already.

With out treatment you run the risk of inflammation of the brain, spinal cord or even bone marrow,It can also cause you to have terrible nerve pain. The virus is spread through sexual contact (doesn't have to be intercourse)with someone who is having a breakout or has a case that is active. It Is Very Very contagious and for no there has been no cure found. The goal of treatment is to 1.controll out breaks.2.relieve pain, itching, and burning. 3.speed the healing process. Your Dr. may also prescribe a pain killer for the pain. You should always avoid physical contact with a person with an active out break.Do not have sex for at least one month after an outbreak.Always use a latex condom.Avoid stress and get plenty of rest as these are things that may trigger an outbreak. I know that I gave you some information you didn't ask for but, I believe that every sexually active person should be aware of this disease and its affects.

It's not deadly. It's spread through sexual contact. I've only ever heard of oral herpes and genital herpes, never hand or shoulder herpes!
