I'm a trained beauty therapist and its highly unlikely your using the wrong toner unless you are allergic to any of the ingredients!!
A toner will not dry out your skin...it also won't close your pores...it refines your pores and makes them less visible!!
No matter how oily your skin is do not use an astringent...these strip your skin and can be painful and very drying!!!!
Cleanse your skin before using your toner by putting the cleanser into your hands and and rubbing in massage movements over your face and neck then remove with damp cotton pads....repeat untill ALL make up is removed!!! THEN you can use your toner...you must use it on clean skin!! It will make your skin tone more even and remove dead skin!!
You should apply it with cotton pads thn blot your skin with tissue after!!
Then moisturise your face and neck!!
Also twice weekly you should exfoliate your skin!!
It is likely you will get an out break of pimples when you start using a new product as your skin won't be used to it...but after a few days your skin will feel much better and look better too

Ok, here goes: first, there is nothing wrong with toners if used according. If OILY SKIN, use one with up to 25% alcohol, these are really called: ASTRINGENT.
If having, NORMAL TO DRY SKIN,that's when you use a TONER, they are usually very mild and refreshing.
To use a TONER or ASTRINGENT, is a preference only, but if one has very OILY SKIN, it is a good thing to use for it will help for EXTRA CLEANING. BREAK OUTS,have NOTHING TO DO with using either one. A clogged pore will turn into a ZITT" and by stimulating the skin, can and will come to the surface. This is a normal process of the Skin itself.
NOTHING WILL CLOSE PORES, AND YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO ANYWAY FOR , CLOSED PORES CAN LEAD TO DEATH.
People always seem to say, want to close pores, there is no such thing, what certain Skincare can do is, SHRINK PORES.
Go to a WELL RESPECTED AND ADVANCED Skincare Salon and have you're Skin analyzed, there after you will be more informed as to you're Skins needs.
Application for Astringent/Toner: Cottonball is good enough and wont matter in which direction.

Who ever came up with the idea that toners were needed?
the same people who write on the bottle of a shampoo to repeat and wash again
It all came about to get more money out of the consumer!
What purpose do they serve? None
You can't tighten a pore or open a pore. You can't close a pore either.
You can have clogged pores which will enlarge them or there can be oil trapped in them that will enlarge them (see an aesthtician as soon as possible if you have that problem) but a toner will not tighten that either
forget toners
instead..for the normal/oily area I recommend using salicylic cleanser for deep cleaning of your skin
for the oily part of your skin oily skin use a sulfur/camphor mask and use an oil free moisturizer to keep your skin clean and clear
if you have serious acne. add benzol peroxide to the Rx
with a 10% glycolic acid gel with added salicylic
do this twice a day on the oily areas
Anyone with cystic acne should see a dermatologist

Most skin toners are alcohol and water based. IMO, the alcohol isn't good for your face and could actually cause a chemical burn, if used too often.
The reason you break out after using a toner is because the alcohol dries out your skin and your skin works overtime, trying to replace the oils that were lost.
How you apply stuff to your face, doesn't really matter. Use a cotton pad and wipe all over your face.
Please try witch hazel. It has no harmful effects, will tighten your pores, and leave your skin feeling "clean".
The cosmetic companies want you to buy their products, at inflated prices, when whitch hazel works just as well, if not better than any they have to offer. Besides that, it's cheap. A bottle will last you a couple of months and is less than two dollars.

First of all, Toners don't really close up pores, they just clean them out so they will close on their own.
Alcohol will just dry your face out more, but not really "harmful"
One of the leading causes of oily faces and pimples is the fact that people dry their face out so much that the skin must naturally replace it fast, and usually ends up with too much oil and breaks out the skin. Sounds weird, but to clear up the oil and breakouts, use a moisturizer on your face no matter what (get one with spf, and a "light" formula) Most toners suit everyone since their whole point is to just remove and dirt, makeup, or even face cleaner that could have gotten left on, or clogged in pores.
Apply it in a circular motion. It works the best.
The best toners and moisturizer are moreso based on budget and personal prefrence... but most will do. I usually pick a cleanser for what best fits my face, then get whatever toner or moisturizer i want.. because they all do the same thing. My favorite cheaper kind is neutrogena... and more expensive is either Clinique or Chanel...
Hope i answered them all and good luck picking one out!!

toners with alcohol ARE harmful to your skin. Everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your blood stream within 30 seconds, so if your toner has alcohol in it, the alcohol will actually get absorbed into your blood streem for one.
Secondly, toners with alcohol strip the acid mantle layer of your skin, which protects your skin and is the first layer of defense for your immune system. Third, alcohol toner strips all the oil from your skin, which is actually necessary to some extent. If you strip it all away, your skin goes into overdrive to produce more and makes too much, which is why your skin gets oily or shiny not long after using it.
Toners are meant to balance the skin after washing and to remove any leftover debris or residue. There are many methods to applying them, like with cotton or by spraying them on.

I personally do not like toners. They are an extra added hassle, they don't close your pores....they clog your pores more than anything else. They also make oily skin very oily and dry skin oily as well. Your better off trying St. Ives Apricot Cream Cleanser and following with a moisturizer.
