Blood clots normally occur in the limbs and the pain is generally localized just below the affected area. If the pain and numbness only happens during your sleep, you may be lying on it in a way that impedes blood flow or "pinches" a nerve. Carpal tunnel syndrome is another possibility. I would also be curious if you have experienced frostbite or noticed any bumps on your wrist. In any of these cases, you should see a doctor.
Often, my fingers will go numb overnight after working out in the gym. The swelling in my neck or shoulders is the cause. The simple solution is a cold compress to the swollen muscle. Then the pain subsides quickly and my fingers return to normal shortly thereafter. This case is not at all dangerous, just a pain in the neck...literally!

Think about your question. "Is it normal to have a numb hand?" Of course it's not normal. The question really should be, "Is it serious...?" The answer to that is something you need to find out from a doctor; the fact that you're in pain at least part of the time tells me that the sooner you find out what's going on, the better.

You may also like to check out a chiropractor, if you get no relief from a doctor. They sound scary but really, they are not. I have a lot of relief from my chiro over the past 18 years, and I have taken all of my kids to her from 3 weeks of age. They are extremely healthy kids, I might add. Good luck.

This could be from a pinched nerve from the cervical spine (the neck area) Have you injured yourself lately? I suggest you see your family doctor and he'll probably refer you to a specialist.

Yes, go to your doctor, it could be carpal tunnel syndrome or a trapped nerve, only the doctor can tell you for sure.
