An engagement party is gift optional, its a celebration to toast the newly engaged couple and alot of people come to do just that, not to give gifts as you will be having a shower and wedding where gifts are mandatory to the event.
If you do by chance get gifts they will be in smaller forms, you wont get appliances or anything like that, some sort of trinket will be the gift of choice or a small amount of money to help you get started with the wedding planning.
Since the party is a gift optional party it is considered very bad manners to have the traditional gift opening in front of everyone as it would make people who opted not to bring gifts uncomfortable. When everyone leaves is when you should open a gift unless someone specifically asks you to open their gift, then you may go to a private room and open it in front of them.
Best of luck!

It is common to receive gifts at an engagement party, but those gifts are usually small. Most people tend to wait to gift a couple at the bridal shower and/or wedding. So, I would not expect gifts at an engagement party, but the couple will probably receive some.

I think it all depends on what is traditional in your family and region. We actually received a lot of gifts at our engagement party. I kind of expected "sentimental" type gifts versus cash or appliance type gifts, but we were given a lot of each type. Some people gave us picture frames, engraved items, and cake plates, but many people gave us cash, gift cards and actual household items (a really nice coffee pot, 2 place setting from our china, ice buckets etc). So I think it al depends. Of course, an engagement party is gift optional type event. But a lot of people will want to give something. Just open the gifts you receive after the party in private, write down who gave what, and make sure everyone who attended the party gets a nice thank you note!

It's not normally a gift giving occasion, but don't be surprised to get some! The weddings and showers are the loot gathering events... but you may well get a lot of things like wine for toasting, etc!
Just accept anything you are given graciously, but don't make too big a fuss about your gifts so as to not make the guest who didn't bring one uncomfortable.

Well, you don't have your own engagement party. No, it is not a gift-giving event.

Oh yes.. Tell them upfront you want cash.. You can't end up with 3 toasters, 4 knife sets, 5 bed sheets, 6 wine bottles etc.
