I've heard that human hair color runs on one continuous spectrum from black to brown to red/orange to blond/yellow to white. I've also heard that there are actually two spectrums, one that goes from dark to blond and another that goes from dark to red. In this case, some dark-haired people have natural blond highlights and will go blond when bleached, and other dark-haired people have natural red highlights that go orange when bleached. Which of these views is correct?

it's even more in depth than you think.

where do i start because you are looking at it from a different angle?

natural hair goes from level 1 black to 10 (or 12 depending on the system being used) which is like a toe head blond/white. (i will show you with a level 11 system)
there is also a remaining color which is the color that remains when it's lightened. this goes from blue (level 1),blue violet (2), violet (3), red/violet (4),red (5), red/orange (6), orange (7), yellow orange (8), yellow (9), yellow/white (10), white (11).

now, when lightener is applied, if the color kind of 'skips' the reds or goes thru them really fast then the person has an ASH BASE to the hair. (on someone who has naturally dark hair this is so far and few between that it's almost a freak of nature)
most ash based hair people are naturally lighter haired (lighter than a level 5 - 6)

so you are correct in both.

people with darker hair that has been bleached will go more red. people with lighter hair that has been bleached will be more blonde. NORMALLY.
but you will always have the ones whose hair followes their own rules.

a class on understanding the volume of developer will help you understand more.

hope i could help without confusing you even more.
have a great day. any more questions? feel free to contact me.
i hope i haven't confused you more.

The very first way you said, because a hair strand depends on its thickness for the color , thicker the hair strand the darker, blonde hair is the thinist, and gray hair..Well , that just means were getting old..LOL.
