I'm 17 and in my last year of school.
I believe i'm strongly in need of a laptop to help me in my studies. My mother disagrees.
Her arguement is that I have a computer at home I can use and she does not believe I need one until I am at university.
My arguement is that it'll be easier for me to continue assignments at school in my study periods. I can type my notes up straight away and I will have acess to the internet in my classes.
I do not have a part time job because my mother wont let me get on. She says I must concentrate on school work and I have sports practices nearly every day after school.
It's not my birthday until November.
Am I being unresonable?

My school has got a very low decile level which means we don't have very much money. We don't have new computers at school. This would not put my family in debt, and I wasn't suggesting my parents paid for all of it.

to all those people saying 'go out and get a job' jesus, this child is still at school, actually completing their final year (which is more than i can say of any of my friends) is active in sports, and sounds very responsible and intellegent.
many people i know started working between the ages of 15 and 17 (myself included) and discovered that when we had buying power, suddenly weed, slutty clothing and nightclubs were affordable. personally i would provide anything to my child that would help them excel in life (such as actually passing highschool with good grades). People need to remember that youngens (hahaha I'm only 22) make some iffy decisions when they're left to their own devices - do u want ur children to have money, to be out and about not doing their homework (snr highschool around three to five hours of homework per night) and associating with god knows who?
so,
MUM - the laptop is not a luxuary. It is a 'notepad and pen with a genie' that gets everything done much faster, allows work to be refined and edited with ease. ur daughter should not be wasting her time rewriting work. fork out the 500 to 1000 bucks and make an investment in her life.

I don't know if wanting a laptop is being spoiled. However I think that when you go to university you will need a laptop that is current as you and /or your parents can afford. Some of your prior questions have told us you are a good student and focused on your future. Why not wait untill you go to university and your parents may consider it an early birthday present. You have demonstated yourself to be a mature and responsible person ( at least based on what you have told us).Good luck on your studies.

I thought you were unreasonable right until I read that you did want to get a job but your mom won't let you.
You see, many people of your mom's generation do not really understand how vital the laptop is for your studies in now days. They think the things are still like they were back in 80s or 90s.
You have to explain your mom exactly how laptop is important in now days if a student wants to do better in his/her studies. Show exactly how more efficient and more productive you will become in school and later in college if you have one.
Because you almost out of school now anyway, maybe it will make more sense if you get one when you will be in college? Because the technology changes so rapidly, and laptops do go down in price over the time, maybe it will be better to wait a little and get one for the college?
I know having laptop for the college classes will greatly help you in many ways.

Well young man, often parents are stuck in the past where they didn't need things to help them improve so they feel if they can do it so can you. Explain to your mom the benefits you can have by having a Notebook, tell her you will gladly earn the money for it and don't expect her to pay for it without being paid back, tell her then when your in college you will work and pay back a portion each month. I know I told my son if I can work, go to school and keep my grades up so could he and back in our days it was possible but working takes time away from studies and courses taught now adays are more intense then back in my days where we learned on beads sliding from side to side.

I wouldn't say you're being unreasonable but if you are at school why can't you use their computers while you're there. And why would you even need a computer during classes to access the Internet? It doesn't make sense to me, but I haven't been in high school in 10 years. Have things changed so much that they allow you to use your computer during lessons in class?

wow you sound like my brother. if my mom said no to something he would complain about it for week on end. in my point of view, you sound like a spoiled brat who needs to learn how to "lose" graciously. and, if you don't have a part time job, and you said that you werent' planning to have your mom buy it, so how were you going to pay for it? computers cost money, and unless you are a rich spoiled brat whose parents give you anything and everything, money doesn't come free, you have to work for it.
tip, though, if you don't enjoy sports, then tell your mom and drop out of them.
and, the school's computers along with your computer at home should be plenty for you to study and do homework on.

Juts be lucky you have one at home you can use, alot of kids arent that fortunate. Although I acually applaud you for wanting to get a part-time job to pay for it, pesronally I would have let you have it. But until you turn 18 you must abide by your parents rules like the or not as long they arent harmfull to you, while it san inconvinience not to have one it isnt harmfull.

If you have a good desktop at home you really don't need a laptop for highschool. Even in college you don't really NEED one, tho it does help (A little). Your college will have soooo many computer labs around campus that all you really need a USB drive to carry your files with you when you are away from your desktop.

Of course I do not think that you are being spoiled! But, you got to remember, your mother said no. She doesn't want to pay for it and she thinks that you have enough already. You're lucky though, I'm not even allowed to have my own computer! But, no, you're not being a spoiled brat.

You have a great mom. You don't really need a laptop. How many other kids have one now? Is this the latest fad? Bet it is. Needing and wanting are two different things. Sounds like your mom wants what's best for you and i'm sure her disposable income has much higher priorities than a laptop. Like your clothes, food, rent, utilities, car, insurance, gas, cable, phone, gas, gas, and more gas, your school supplies, your school functions, your spending money, etc. etc. Appreciate what you have. There's alot of people who don't even have the afor mentioned.
