You register, then sit and wait for awhile, just like you would at any other doctor's office, then you called into their office. They usually have a desk that they sit behind. It's not like you see on the movies where you lay on a couch. You will sit in a chair across from them and simply TALK about your issue and problems. (This is for a Psychiatrist). A psychiatrist is who you first need to see when dealing with any mental health issue. They are the ones that are MDs, can run tests, and diagnose you. A psychologist cannot do that. Psychologists are like licensed counselors except with a Doctorate Degree (basically). You may be referred to one of them for therapy after you've seen a Psychiatrist. Don't worry about your initial visit. Just relax! It is a very comfortable atmosphere. Just be open with the Psychiatrist about everything! (maybe have notes with you so that you can remember what to tell them) Good Luck and God Bless!

I haven't really had to worry about that. Last time I just went to where the ambulance took me. The other time I went where the insurance company told me I had to go.
It doesn't matter so much which professional you see as long as they actually are a professional. What matters most is if they are someone you can be honest with. It also help if they are good at coordinating with others because a psychologist or counselor cannot prescribe medication and psychiatrists rarely have time to talk so many people need more than one person treating them.

I never get to see the psychiatrist. The doctor from the government clinic wanted to refer me to a psychiatrist. The nurse laugh at me for being depressed at such a young age. I got fed up and decide to read up to cure myself instead.

Thanks to that nurse. I was more determined to rid myself of any depression and successfully done so without any medication.

My friend visited a psychiatrist once. The psychiatrist was not very helpful and just listen to what my friend has to say. When the time is up, he just prescribe the medication. My friend took the medicine and become drowsy. "No thinking, no depression" is the motto of the depression medication.

Almost everyone can experience External Depression, that is ,something outside of yourself such as the death of a family member, loss of a job ,etc. causing you to feel blue. In these cases, counseling should help. However, if your depression comes on regardless of your situation (Internal depression), you need a psychiatrist or a psychologist( the former dispenses drugs along with counseling while the latter gives council without drugs)

Psychologist have the better medical training if it is chemical depression.
The are several types of monitored test they can run as well as check blood work.

If it is because of issues you have dealt with a psychiatrist is best.

How good they are will depend on their school, teachers and personal outlook on life.

If you can get a referral from a trusted source it is best.

It is always wise to see a doctor first, as the problem is sometimes related to the thyroid gland, and this may be missed by others.
