Try going to a music store, or Guitar Center if possible, & asking them for a beginners step by step guide to playing the guitar. Good luck :-)

I work nightshift, and I sleep in the daytime, so it's difficult for me to attend any formal classes for guitar. Not to mention the cost of those lessons.

Something that helped me alot was a site called, Guitarvision. You download a guitar program for free. It has an animated guitar. You can select the song genre that you're interested in, pick a song, download it to your guitar player, and it will show you the chords, strum patterns, and you can control how fast or slow it goes. You can also rewind and repeat. Then you can learn at your own pace.

Also, once you get established and learn some chords, you can go to any of the guitar tablature sites, copy chords for songs, and try to put them together to play whatever music you are interested in. It will take more time to learn guitar, I think, but if you are patient and try to practice as much as you can, it will pay off for you.

Best wishes.

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMT4H It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

iv played for 15 years.. and self-taught.. no clases no guru's.. seriously theres no easy way.. but for me the more time you spend on your guitar, the more hot-licks u can get..
for starter learn your fave song first.. get the bass part, then work with the chords.. and lastly.. make sure u want to play.. that is the most important thing..

quote this: every damn good guitarist in the world still have 10 fingers..

It is all up to you. Obviously it is easier if you have someone to tell you what to do , someone that will challenge you every week and take you out of your "comfort zone". But, if you are very "musical" or naturally talented , you could became really good, by just listening to music and transcribing it by ear.
