A person I know had a 'chemical abortion' at about 6 to 8 weeks pregnant, and has told people her doctor told her it was going to be a boy. Is this even possible to know at that point?

Oh, there is no way it could be more than 8 weeks - I strongly suspect it was closer to 4 to 7 weeks myself.

Is it at all possible to know the sex before 8 weeks? I think this chick is pulling our legs, and its not fair on the guy either - he was really upset by it all.

The baby would more than likely had to be much farther than 6-8 weeks. The baby would be far to small to tell. By 10 weeks that baby is only the size of a peanut. You are lucky to be able to tell the sex at 16 weeks. Usually doctors can tell about 18-20 weeks. Sometimes later if the baby chooses to be shy about showing what the gender is. Also, from what I have read on www.genetree.com , which you might look up, it says it is possible to detect the y chromasome as early as 6-8 weeks and is 99% accurate. The price may be very pricey as the prices at genetree are 249 for basic package, and 299 for bigger package. The difference is in dilivery time.

(article at www.genetree.com) Doctors may have this technology, but I would think it would be expensive at a doctors. I am unsure however.

Early Gender Test: Boy or Girl?

One of the most exciting outcomes of recent genetic research is the discovery that there is fetal DNA in an expectant mother’s blood as soon as six weeks gestation all the way through to delivery of the child. During pregnancy, small amounts of the baby’s DNA pass into the mother’s blood stream; so with a finger prick from the mother, we can analyze the baby’s DNA. If DNA from a Y-chromosome is detected, we can confidently determine she will have a baby boy. If there is no DNA from a Y-chromosome, we can determine with equal confidence that she will have a girl. It’s that simple.

Quick Results, 3-5 days from receiving samples at the lab.
The DNA Testing Technology:
Samples are analyzed in the lab with a process known as PCR. The classic study validating the PCR method for detecting gender was published in the journal Human Genetics in 2005. Scientists in Italy (Galbiati et al) obtained blood from pregnant women at different stages of pregnancy, as early as 6 weeks pregnant. They identified fetal DNA by PCR. They studied 1,837 women. This included women with previous pregnancies, miscarriages and live births. After the women gave birth, their results were 99% accurate for predicting fetal sex. Note that if the lab detects Y chromosomal DNA in the maternal blood, this is a very certain results suggesting the unborn child is a boy. If the lab did not detect Y chromosomal DNA, it very likely indicates the baby is a girl; however, there is a small possibility that there may be very little Y chromosomal DNA present that was below the threshold of detection, indicating that it could still be a boy.

Easy and non-invasive:
Once you order your gender test, a kit will be promptly mailed to you. The test kit comes pre-packed with everything you will need to take a small painless finger prick and send your blood spot to the laboratory, including a prepaid return envelope. Simply drop this in the mail with your blood spot, and you will know the gender of your baby within days.

If the doctor took a sample of the amniotic fluid he could tell. Because there is DNA in the amniotic fluid.
But someone can usually guess at 16 weeks on an ultrasound and 20 weeks a person can usually tell for sure.
