You don't say why you want to say goodbye. There are many ways to say goodbye, but the rule to follow is to do it sensitively.
Though you may experience hurt yourself caused by the other persons words or actions, its important you remember that you already knew this was going to happen. Do as you would be done by. Be strong because if you do want this break don't allow yourself to change your mind because of the hurt the other person is feeling. Do tell this person face to face, it will send the message that you mean what you say. Avoid using to many cliches, be true. Good luck to you both for a brighter better future.

Not enough information, is it a friend or lover? Is goodbye forever because they are moving to another part of the world or are they just off to work in the morning? Are they going to survive your parting or are you saying good bye to a beloved person that has a terminal illness. Your question is far too nebulous you need to clarify many points in order for people to give you a valid answer.

Don't say good by, I spent 20 years in the military and we moved and moved and moved. We always felt like Good by sounded so final. There are a number of American Indian tribes that don't even have a word for good by. Things like we will see you when we see you or I will pray and dream of you while we are apart. This what I used to say to my wife when we were separated for a time, I would then say I love you and walk away

If there someone "special" why would you have to say goodbye? The circumstances may change but if your not a fair weathered friend you don't say goodbye.

all you can do is just tell them no matter how it hurts ive had i done to me recently and it does hurt but things get better i hope
