Be ever so careful to make sure that the suspect doesn't whack his head on top of the doorway when he is being placed in the back of the car?

aah,

"the don't pile on the rabbit" theory

we do that to restrain the subject and to maintain control during an arrest, remember some suspects maybe on drugs or are physically stronger then some of the cops, so the more the merrier to subdue the perp.

Keep safe....

Wow some of these answers made me feel like police are not well liked. Imagine that............since they are the ones who have to go catch the guy who is molesting your children, raping your wives and daughters, and sadly your sons, stealing from you and damaging your belongings which you worked so hard to get. Burning your houses down and killing your family members, enticing your children to do drugs and driving right next to you on a busy roadway drunk as all get out................You'd think most everyone would be thankful the cops put their lives on the line to get those bad people off the street so they can't hurt you or your loved ones.....oh wait, maybe it's because YOU were the one who had to be wrestled to the ground and placed in handcuffs! That's the only reason I could see where someone would not like "cops".
Anyway to answer the question which is the real reason we are all here..................First of all the show COPS is really a bad rendition of how most law enforcement agencies work. Not that the ones on there do a bad job.................But if it's not exciting and crazy who would want to watch it?????? If you haven't been up against someone who realizes they are going to jail and they really just don't want to go and have nothing to lose by trying to get away..........then you cannot possibly judge. Do you remember awhile back when a female trooper pulled the guy in a van over and he had his 7 year old daughter with him when the trooper found a block of marijuana under the seat? He literally pounded the crap out of her face. She will never be normal again. did it all in front of his 7 year old. When asked he said he "just couldn't go back". That trooper can't even talk right anymore. Officer safety is of the utmost and it always has to be stressed the officers have to maintain control of the situation so everyone goes home safe. Even the bad guy if at all possible.

Because this is a critical high risk time during the arrest. If a suspect is going to resist arrest or attack the arresting officers, it is during this time that they will act. Generally, the method of choice because it's the safest way for both officer and suspect is to initiate the arrest with overwhelming force. A skinned knee or elbow is far better than a gunshot wound to the belly!

when we thow a suspect to the ground and get on top of them, the suspect is unrestrained, meaning he is not cuffed up yet, and more usual than not, he is still resisting.
we have policies in our departments that read, once the resisting stops, you must stop.
once we have control of the suspect, and have him restrained, we usually are cool with them. we do not want to see them get hurt. we also do not want thier heads to hit th edge of the car, because he has stopped resisting, and that would be noted as some sort of physical attack on the suspects car......

If you're asking honestly, the only reason that they "pile" on a subject is to restrain him. At that point in time they had to take that action as something occurred prior that made them think if they don't get on him and pin him down , he might harm someone. Once he is restrained and in their custody, can they become less aggressive and treat him like any other person should be treated and look out for his well being if he allows them too.

We call it a "pig pile". We overwhelm the bad guy with force to get him into custody to prevent him from hurting one of us.

Imagine the gall of us officers in wanting to go home to see our families!!!!!

Sounds like you have been watching a movie. But remember for every bad arrest there has been one thousand good arrests.

People are respectfull of what they value. Cops in general from all my own personal observations have little or no value for citizens and people in general but are very protective of their gear and dogs. Cop cars are part of their gear, they dont want the perts heads to scuff the car.
