A DC circuit only has resistance (R), however an AC circuit also has reactance (X).

Reactance is a measure of opposition to a sinusoidal alternating electric current. It is also measured in ohms, but is 90 degrees out of phase with resistance.

Impedance (Z) is the vector sum of the two.

R^2 + X^2 = Z^2
