I promised myself that I would read the Bible from beginning to end, I have just finished Samuel part 1, and I am shocked, up to now there has been a catalogue of genocide by the Israelites against anyone and everyone. What is this ''God''?

I think Christians should eat their Bibles personally.

But you must agree that the Israelites did not get rid of all their enemies. Somewhere in the first three books God does tell Moses or someone that He knows the outcome of His people when they enter the new land. He mentions that He knows that they will not obey Him and take on the nations idol worship. They(the Israelites) many times call upon God to help them and promise that they'll obey Him if He does. But years go by and they disobey again and go to the gods\idols of the nations. When you get to the New Testament you'll understand better how God saves all the sinners of the world if they accept His Gracious gift of life eternal. It is a spiritual book more than just a history book of God's people. God is actually showing us what will bring us everlasting life. And He tells us how He is going to do this. And the book tells us about God's Almighty power to be able to do this. It you read it like an action story or just a history you'll not get the real meaning of the book and why it was written. Since you haven't come to the part yet of where Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, is going to resurrect those who practice rightousness(which is what God is all about) and not evil, you will not get the gist of the book at all. God has the power to bring back to life those who've died if he read in their hearts that they believed and obeyed Him. God doesn't want evil in the world. He wants(and so do I and I'm sure many good people) life worth living without pain, fear, and yes death which would be paradise(like in the garden before we disobeyed Him). Think about it. We don't have to fear evil people or spirits hurting us,stopping us from living a good life,or worry about being killed, and death. Blood and guts and war are very much a part of life on earth then as well as now. But Almighty God has promised us freedom from that in eternal life with Him in His Kingdom which will rule. Satan will not have jurisdiction for evermore because God at that time(in the future) will have destroyed Satan who is destroying the world now and He will destroy Satan forevermore. You just got to get thru the book to realise that Satan(an evil spirit) is ruling the world still but his rule will come to an end. Do you want a good spirit to rule you or a bad spirit to rule you. One or the other will in this world until God's kingdom is established. And if you choose the evil spirit and God destroys Satan and his evil spirits forever where will that leave you? The Bible isn't just a book you can read for entertainment but a book that will save your life.

Reading the Bible without an introductory guide could lead you to the conclusions you have just made.

Many people are disillusioned by the low moral standards we see in some characters in the Bible. Yet it would be unfair to take someone to court in the twentieth century for laws yet to be revealed in the twenty-first century. In the same way, we must be aware of the progressive development of morals in the Bible.

First of all, when the Bible reveals the moral failings of its great heroes, it is just telling us the unvarnished truth, unpalatable though it may be. It avoids the later Christian tendency to paint its saints with untouchable holiness.

Peace!

He is a jealous God. He is a God Who cannot and will not tolerate unholyness. That's why He sent His Son to die to redeem man to a state of Holiness. To understand what He did and why, keep reading. It's all about His grace and mercy, even if, in Samuel, it doesn't really look like it. Sin WILL be punished, then now and always. The wages of sin? Death. The gift of God? Forgiveness.

Yes, the bible records some horrific details. It is a historical account, warts and all, of God's revelation to mankind. It also reflects the contexts of the periods under question. That mankind was slipping fast into utter depravity was reason enough for the creator of mankind to act. God was perfectly within His righteousness to deliver the ultimate justice to the unrepentant. Indeed, one person has found the total body count in the bible to be over 2.2 million persons. But let's not forget the total numbers of those that have repented after hearing God's call to righteousness.

Some will say, “But isn't God unjust to judge the whole world by Christian standards?”

God judges justly. “All who sinned without [knowing] the [Mosaic] law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law” (ROM 2:12).

Even pagans show “that what the law requires is written on their hearts” (ROM 2:15) if we honestly consult our hearts, we will find two truths: that we know what we ought to do and be, and that we fail to do and be that.

Although this may seem appalling to consider it is God's right to bring judgment on whom He desires, when He desires, through whom He desires, in the manner that He desires. Man simply does not have all of the knowledge required to judge God on this issue. The amazing thing is that God was as long suffering with sinful people as He was. What better way to impress upon God's children the sinfulness of sin than to have them administer a punishment for sin?

It is also true that the nations God commanded Israel to destroy (i.e. Amorite, Canaanites, Midianites) had enticed Israel to sin. God desired to put an end to Idolatry. What better way to eliminate Idolatry than to completely destroy the entire Nation responsible?

Women and children were part of God's judgment in order to completely destroy the influence and Idolatry of the foreign nation.

Although Israel returned to Idolatry time and time again, the Nations judged by God were responsible for their own sin.

It matters not how or when a person dies. It matters what a person's relationship to God is. If children are "innocent" they will be judged by God as such even if they die as part of Gods judgment against the nation in which they live.

In Romans 11:22 we read:
"Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off."

God is the one who created you, the earth, the stars, space, galaxies and every physical existence. God created everything that is good and all evil is from Satan. Satan is Gods' enemy I think you may have read that already I am not sure. So let me get straight to your question. God is a very loving and kind God. He made you because he wants fellowship with people. He loves you very much and he wants you to accept him and the fact that he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for you so that you could have the decision to go to Jesus and ask him to forgive you. In order to go to heaven and be accepted by god you must believe upon God's name, believe that Jesus Christ the son of God who is yet God himself ( don't worry about understanding that part about the trinity noone really gets it. think of an egg the shell, the outside layer, and the yolk. God is god the father, son,, and holy spirit.) died for you on the cross in order to forgive your sins that you may enter into heaven with God the father. But you must also Go to God and ask him to forgive you for your sins, truly mean it and turn from your sinful ways for everyone is even born into sin. If you mess up take it to god and admit that you messed up and try not to do it again. God is a very loving god and he loves you very much and would love to have a personal relationship and converse with you. I believe God still talks today. I talk with him every day. Just truly seek him and you will find him he promises it in the bible. "seek ye first the kingdom of god and his rightousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. ......seek and ye shall find...knock and the door shall be opened unto you" Don't neccessarily take everyone else's word about god. believe the bible. I suggest you read first John in the bible if you want to know the character and life of God. I really hope this helps you and that you would come to me or someone who you truly trust really knows God with any other questions that you have. God bless!

The God of the Bible wanted to prove He is stronger than the gods of the other nations, in hopes that people would follow Him and his obedient people to a much better life for us all. Trouble was, his obedient people didn't obey him, any more than we do today, so things stay the same.

Great job.
Everything recorded in the Bible is not acceptable behavior by God.

All these "ities" were bad people and God had to remove them. ( even in medical terms iti is not good ) When you see the Big picture, His promises are kind. : )
