Thank You, it is nice to hear of my country being spoken of in such a nice way!
Yes, we do seem to have strong values...especially where a mate is concerned.I will tell you how i think we ended up being who we are today.
Our ancestors came to this country just over 200 years ago, and that is not such a long time......We all have a relative who remembers how harsh a place it was for such a long time, or they remember the stories told to them. About how they carved this nation out of the bush...literally! And how the success of that came mostly from a helping hand from ones neighbours and mates. You had to rely on each other or you would most likely fail...And that form of hardship(settling hardship)was not even over, and then came the wars, and relying on your mates was again the way we got through it again, both at home and at war. Therefore,Helping your mates has become ingrained in us like the dust of our land...it has become part of our DNA! I hope we never loose that...When 9/11 happened, many people on TV said ..we are all American today....I saw how our form of mateship was alive and well in the USA....Its there in most people, but the sad thing is it usually takes a tragedy to bring it out..Its just closer to the surface in many Aussies. But i saw it in the USA that day. And your mighty country has come out of your ordeal with that closer to the surface in each and every one of you...those terrorists didn't win! You triumphed, just like our ancestors did when forging my country, and you did it using mateship......
As for our forefathers mistreatment of the aboriginals......It is a stain that was put on our heritage by the english. It is a stain that i a white girl will wear, but not proudly. I live in awe of our countries true owners. I attend national Sorry Day marches every year. And i support all of their causes...believe me the injustice continues....look up Doomagee from Palm Island.
So thank you for your compliments, I hope we can live up to them.

I don't agree that Australians have strong values. In fact, until quite recently is was impossible to be "unaustralian". There was nothing that an Australian could do that would warrant banishment. Even ex-pats like Germaine Greer would be defended, to some extent.

However, recently Australia has been following the absolutist view as exemplified by "Yer either with us, or again' us!" The sort of stories that used to be prefaced by "only in America" are starting to surface here as the fierce rise of the individual takes over our natural socialist tendencies.

Australians can cope with paradoxes that would melt the mind of a yank. I know of 2 Australian citizens - one from Austria, one for White Russia - who handed out how-to-vote cards for "Australians Against Further Immigration" during a federal election. That's Australia. :)

Australians aren't always keen on the Prime Minister, unlike Americans who revere their President for life, even if they are a complete disaster. Australian Prime Ministers receive reverence only years after they leave office. Furthermore, political enemies tend to become best mates to attack the incumbent.

And we can swear as good as the British, and contrary to popular belief, swearing is both big and clever.

The redeeming feature of Australians is that they will do what needs to be done without a fuss. I was in the Newcastle earthquake in 1989 and there was not one instance of looting. Instead, they were turning away people who wanted to help at the major disaster site. We worked together and helped each other. That recovery period gave me great hope in Australia that a new era of mateship, trust and tolerance will take us forward.

Well there are murderers in Australia too you know, and some of our convict ancestors were murderers too. But you're right, we do have strong values and a great sense of giving everyone a "fair go" or "fair crack of the whip". I don't know about being forged by conservatives. Australia began its modern life as a penal colony overseen by harsh British colonial masters. Some Australians these days are conservative (generally older people), but most I'd say are in favour of the working classes getting a better deal. Watch our federal elections later this year, we will get rid of that Bush-loving backside-licker Howard and put a decent Labor government in charge. But awesome, yes, I'd definitely go along with that. Thanks for the compliment!

We get along with most people because we have to. Australia is half Roman Catholic and half Protestant. So we mostly know when to keep our mouths shut. Apart from that old scene, we have a lot of people from all over Europe and now Asia here so we are a bit careful there too, most of the time.

This also encourages us to have highly developed bull*hit detectors which seem to be missing in some parts of the world. This makes us see management textbooks, the WMDs of Iraq, fundamentalist religion, economics, alien abductions, various god-botherers, the Bermuda triangle and most politicians as the heaps of steaming male bovine excreta that they usually are. (Most of us got over religion a long time ago.)

This is not to say we can't get sucked in. We can, but it often does not last , not for the majority. Mr A. Lincoln got it right there.

It's true the place was founded by tough people. The English, Irish and Scots have usually been pretty tough when they had to be. And they had to be in Australia. The climate saw to that.

I'd put a lot of our virtues down to personal conservatism crossed with a near-socialist view of what is right for society as a whole. Add to that a climate that encourages outdoor activities a lot of the time.

I'm an Aussie and I agree that we are awesome!! Thanks for that!! I think it is because we have strong bonds of 'mateship' and we try to give everyone a 'fair go'. Up until recently I lived in a tourist town where we would get an influx of overseas visitors every year to see our whalesharks. I have to say that it made my day to talk to people from other countries and help them out if need be. I personally believe that everyone is equal and everyone should be treated as such. Fair dinkum mate!

We are what we are.

Wazzup seems to forget the slaughter of the native american indians.

I'm sorry for the way our country was settled, however that was over 200 years ago and well before my time.

I live in a time of reconciliation. The hand of friendship has been extended to the native people and we are all working together to come to an understanding that will lead to a brighter future, not as white, not as black, but HUMANS!!! Get over yourself WAZZUP.

watzzzup, the reason is that in Australia we don't put up with too many wan*ers like you. Every country was forged by force. Even the so called "natives" killed off some other race years before any white colonisation, that's life.
As for Nazis, although they were spread across many countries (I seem to remember the US and USSR protecting a lot of the top Nazi scientists in return for their knowledge) the majority ended up in Latin American countries.
Why don't you read some factual literature and stop sprouting all that brainwashed, uneducated leftist crap.

I have never really given it much thought, but I know how I feel deep down inside.. I am a proud man, who loves his family and country and I can't forget my mates..I don't know where you are from but assuming USA.. So I think that deep down we probably aren't much different as to what I see and hear of people over there...Your country has more wan*ers than ours because it's bigger and more populated..We do have strong values yes and hopefully the political circus that's operating now will be ousted soon before they can do any more damage.. It's the young people now who are suffering.. Take it easy...)O(

I dont know why we are are so good. Probably because we dont have wankers like amintashu living here, and if you do please leave. We are not racist, and how dare he compare us to the US and Britain, they are worse than us as far as racism is concerned. Maybe the answewrer bneeds to take of his rose coloured glasses. Sure we have our bad people but most of us believe in giving everyone black or white a fair go.
After wtriting this it seems the poltically correct person who was accusing us all of being racist was removed. Which is good.
