I know that many cats dislike the vets, but you are going to have to take her if she has an open wound. If you dont then it could get worse and she could get a huge infection which could possible kill her.

There is a small chance that there may be a behavioural problem behind the licking, if so then she must still see a vet, and go through all treatments they recommend so as to rule out any medical probelm. If none of these work, ask to be referred to a cat behaviour expert and they should be able to eliminate the problem.

The sooner you take your cat to the vets the better, if it is medical or behavioural. If it is medical an is left too long, it could also become a behavioural problem.

For her own good you need to take her to the vet. It could be an allergy, it could be a parasite, it could be something else. If it looks infected, it probably is and she needs antibiotics. If it isn't infected and the vet can't find the cause he may give her steroids to stop the scratching. Because she's licking you need to be very careful about putting anything on it.

Here are a few suggestions about taking her to the vet: Make sure she goes in a carrier. Put the carrier in the middle of the living room a few days before your appointment. Put a towel and some treats in there so the cat will have a pleasant association with the carrier. There are also calming herbs that might help. Consult an online pet supply such as Drs. Foster & Smith.

The best solution would be to see a vet, but if you cannot then you must get her to stop licking at the wound. It will only cause more damage and infection. Get an e-collar (looks like a cone) from your local pet store and put it on, yes she'll probably hate it but she'll get use to it. Then clean the infected area with an antibacterial handsoap 3-4 times a day and apply an antibiotic cream like Triple Antibiotic. Depending on how severe the infection is, she may need oral antibiotics as well, which you can only get through a vet. Good luck

Where is the wound? Are you able to wrap it with vet wrap? Flush it out with Hydrogen Peroxide, be sure it's clear of any contamination, apply antibiotic ointment, non-stick cotton square and wrap. Cleanse and change the wrap every day. My concern is the infection, it could turn to sepsis and actually kill her. I would take her to the vet regardless of her freaking out. Vets and techs know how to handle and restrain cats. Really, it's for her own benefit and she will be fine once at home. You really need to find the source of the problem. If you cannot handle seeing her freak out, then leave the exam room and trust that they know what they are doing. Well wishes...

Also, an Elizabethan Collar will not work well on a cat, if at all. You could try it, but I don't recommend it, they freak out with something like that on them. Ever see a cat get it's head stuck anywhere? Not a pretty site.

I agree with previous answer. Take her to the vet or maybe there's a mobile vet in your area, who can come to your house. I called one when I had mine put down to spare her the freeking out at the vet's.
I also think this could very well be fleas, so try some flea stuff first and see if it works. Might do the trick. It could also be a behaviour problem and she might need antidepressants, but only the vet could diagnose that for sure.
Good luck in any case.

She really should see the vet to rule out whether it is an allergy or a parasite problem or a behavioral issue. To keep your cat from biting and scratching the area, she may need to wear an Elizabethan collar (one of those cone shaped rigid collars). Your vet will also be able to provide this for you.

It is probably a skin problem of some sort.Mom's cat had to have a salve put on two times a day for the same problem. At first she thought it would clear up on it's own but then the cat started in on a new spot. It's like dry skin or eczema to a human.

Hi, It sounds like a flea allergy my cat suffers with this, i use frontline i get mine from Hyperdrug.com its around £15.59 inc vat. for a pack of 6 if you go to the vets they charge you around £18.00 for a pack of 3. My cat freaks out when i take him to the vets so this is an alternative. Once he has his frontline on he still scrats but he does not have open wounds and he isn't suffering with them. Frontline kills fleas as soon as they bite the cat. Try it. Good Luck

If it is infected you need to see the Vet..... and if necessary get a cone collor that fits around the cats head so it can not bite the area to cause further damage. Clean the area thouroughly......

Well i think your cat might have been bitten by some insect. The insect's poison might be irritating her continously.
As for the vet maybe the person is preventing the cat to scratch causing irritation.
Silly advice: Try applying Dettol
