Some people use the Relaxation Response as taught by Herbert Benson, M. D. in his book by the same title to fall asleep quickly and effortlessly. Its purpose is not to facilitate sleep but it is very effective when used for sleeping. It's done like this: Breathe into your nose, then, as you exhale through your nose think the word "one" or any other word, thought or prayer that appeals to you, such as "joy," "peace" or whatever. Keep a passive attitude; don't worry about doing it right. If your mind wonders simply go back to the repetition. After a short while you will fall asleep. For more detail see The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, M.D. It is probably at your local library

I usually don't fall asleep fast, so I go to bed and turn the TV on until I get sleepy and try not to think too much, don't drink any caffeine 8 hours before bed, alcohol can also affect your sleep, but once in a while I drink a beer, like on the weekends and fall asleep, you can also try reading, or having some tea, there are blends to help you relax, sweeten it with honey.

Light reading material works sometimes. I tried Ambien once and don't know that it helped much, but be careful because there have been odd side effects reported--not merely sleepwalking, but cooking and even driving in your sleep. I often do it by breathing, slowly inhaling a full breath and then letting it "fall" quickly out of me.

Ambien might be okay if I would clean the house, do laundry or mow the lawn in my sleep and go back to bed. That driving thing scares me.

Hi Centurion...
I took an Ambien and a Soma and I am still sitting here awake.
Its sucks.
Most nights it works like a charm, but about once a week-- nothing.

I'm glad you're still on here though!

Relax, listen to soft, gentle, soothing music: or, the good old method of counting sheep; count backwards. Or, again, read a book not so very interesting, it'll put you to sleep! pill should be the last..est resort! avoidable!

take a the warmest bath you can stand, sit there and relax. usually the warm water starts getting your body tired. sort of like a sauna would and you tend to want to sleep.

warm milk, and white noise (a fan or nature CD)
use your bedroom only for sleeping, don't read in bed, put TV and computers in another room. when you do get tired, go to bed!
