Dragons live forever, but not so little boys, magic rings and paper wings make way for other toys, then one night it happened jackie draper came no more and puff the mighty dragon sadly ceased his fearless roar, his head was bent with sorrow, green scales fell like rain, puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane, without his life long friend, puff could not be brave, so puff the mighty dragon sadly slipped back in his cave--

isn't this kind of what it's like when you lose your faith completely, or outgrow it? Does God crumble to dust or slink away to hide when we find we no longer have time to play his childish games and our responsibilities and need to survive force us to put our crosses and books away like the toys of our childhood? Are those lucky enough, blessed enough, to still have the faith of the child saint therese still playing with the magick dragon, to whom nobled kings and princes would bow whene'ere they came?

Excellent analogy Hayden! But you maybe a little off in the time line of a child's mind. Up to the age of 7, a child thinks with the magical hemisphere o the brain (left, right, I don't remember which is which). At about age 7 the logical side starts to operate and slowly takes over as the magical side starts to die. This is about the same time that they really start to hammer home the bible stories into the young brains (yes, I was a victim of the horrifying stories as a child).
It is believed that because our magical mind has shut down, we no longer are able to see the magical connectedness we share with the Universe, and this is why their dogmatic beliefs of human superiority are able to thrive in the minds of the believers.
Many of us have moved on from the arrogant beliefs of human superiority and the Big Daddy in the Sky stories and reawakened the magical mind to rediscover the old philosophies of the elders...We are all connected.
The Dragon is a symbol of power and wisdom. She guards a precious gift. I should know, I am one! ; )

I look at it as the child closing his eyes and ceasing to see the wonder of the the world, the things that only show themselves to those who look for them with an open mind. The child turns to survival in the modern rat race, and his focus narrows accordingly. His imaginative capacity and creativity might suffer because of this, but he will be focused and capable of making his own way in the world that everyone else can see. I don't think of it so much as he loses his faith, but that he loses his open-minded inquiring spirit. The fact that Puff has a point of view and reacts to this points to the interactive nature of the universe. Not only do we affect the world and our surroundings--they affect us. Many adults have forgotten why this is, but the young boy understood, until he turned his back on Puff and the unseen, interconnected world and became entangled in the world of Men. In the past I have often looked at this as Man turning from Nature and becoming caught up in the mire of "civilized" life--a loss of innocence and a closing of the mind.

Sadly faith for some may well be like faith in Santa and this they would grow out of for others who know the truth it becomes a true relationship with a real God. I think the problem here is whether or not someone actually took the time to know God in a real way, Jesus said there would be those that called him lord lord and he never knew him.

Yeah ... I have often thought the same. I don't know about faith but if growing up means living without the "dragon" then I guess I haven't grown up nor do I intend to.

This question is going to stick with me and make me think a long while...

Suffice it to say that this was my favorite childhood song and I would get so mad when anyone would try to tell me it was a druggie song. Maybe all along I was equating it with something more, like what you pointed out.

Thanks for the mental candy for tonight!!

The older I get the stronger my faith becomes!

I highly doubt GOD crumbles to dust or slinks away from anything, especially your mis-placed faith. I do believe he is sad for anyone who loses faith.

Hmm...I've been watching you Hayden. I like your style and I like your friends.
In a way, you're right. Fairy tale ideas of god fall away when one 'grows up', but when one awakens, the universe becomes one face, and the name 'God' does not do it justice. I hope you can enjoy this view.

God and Puff the Magic Dragon are identical in that neither of them exist. I don't think there's any particular virtue in being child-like.
