You probably see the M-4, basically the same weapon and capabilities. Although the M-16 is just a little more accurate. I hope thats what you meant, unless you are seeing alot of machine guns like the M240B or M249, those are issued out to all the fire teams also.

Many of the troops are issued the M4 CAR type M-16A2 rifle. The standard issue M-16A2 only has a 3-shot burst in it. The M4 has full-auto options.
In Afghanistan, the M-16's were having problems reaching out and touching someone. Especially around the Tora Bora area when the terrorists were holed up in the caves. They were firing at least .30 caliber weapons at our boys. So we got wise, and brought in some Springfield M1A's in 7.62mm, and we cleaned their damned clocks!!
Entry teams in urban combat are either going to go with the M4's, Benelli shotguns, or even MP-5's in the case of Special Ops.

The M-16 was, the newest incarnation of this rifle is the M4 or M4A1.
On TV you probably see many special units doing entry sweeps and crowd suppression, these soldiers use other types of weapons including HK MP5 variants and shotguns like the M1014. Also, currently issued to US soldiers and deployed in Iraq is the SAW, which replaced the M60.

The .223 is a varmint round. I shoot squirrels with it for hell's sakes. Humans need at least a .30 caliber hole in them in my opinion. The M-14 or M-1 Garand had the range and knock down power needed. The .45 also had the knock down power. The 9MM just doesn't cut it. If you're a cop or in the military you want something that will put down the bad guy WITH ONE SHOT. This is especially important if you are engaging more that one person.

When training the Iraq's the troops gave them the M-16s they use.The Iraq's wouldn't have it they wanted the superior rifle-the AK-47-like the insurgents use. So US had to buy the AKs for them.

You're probably seeing the M-4, its a better weapon close quarter/urban terrain.
Also the M16 doesn't have very high tolerance for the elements or debris so it might not be the best choice in dessert environments. It's accuracy would be a plus in open terrain but I don't to many offensive operations take place in open areas.

It's still being used. The basic Marine Infantryman uses the M16A4 as of right now. We also have the M16/203 and M249 SAW. Gunnery Sergeants and above uses the M4A1.

The US Military still uses the M-16 but, the common weapon used now is the M-4. It is shorter and has a collapsible stock. The weapon is more maneuverable in tight situations. But, is still accurate at 200 meters....Hope that helps....

They use the M-4 which is a carbine (shorter) version of the 16. It works better in close quarters like hallways, vehicles etc. They also use a lot of AK 47's because that's what the Iraqii forces have and we're training them to use them.
