Despite the fact that this myth has been debunked by everyone from professors of ornithology to the USA Rice Federation, the vast majority of people still believe it.
How can I quash this widespread myth? Will people ever come to embrace the truth that rice, a naturally occurring grain, is not harmful to birds?

Well, you could print out a bunch of articles and send them to all the wedding planners, florists, cake bakers, tux renters, dress makers, photographers, and every person you ever knew.
But why waste all that energy if the birds will eat bird seed or rice without any problems? It's not such a big deal in the scheme of things. As long as people aren't throwing something that is environmentally hazarous, who will be hurt by rice or bird seed?
There are far more important causes to take up. Just consider yourself educated on the subject and let people think what they want. If they don't want to believe you, so what?

Nowadays, people don't use rice not because it hurts the birds, because it's a pain in the but to clean up. one summer, I worked as a custodian at a church, and when they had weddings on saturdays, the rice had to be cleared by services the next day..I would spend over an hour trying to sweep it up and look nice. Luckily, our church banned the use of rice a wedding ceremonies. bubbles, bird releasing, butterfly releasing, and rose petals are now much more popular

You can't. Some people are just going to believe what they believe, regardless of proof and reason. Put your effort into convincing people of something that has a more substantial impact on life. This subject is not worth the argument.

Here's something more worthwhile in my opinion, get them to stop with the butterflies in the little paper boxes. Most of them die anyway LOL

Rice is harmful because if birds eat enough it will expand in their stomachs and kill them
