As the puppy slides out, let the mother lick and tear the amniotic sack off. Unlike humans, puppies usually are born still inside this sack. If the mother seems confused as to what to do, gently tear the membrane itself and allow the fluid to be released. Give the mother time to take over but if she doesn’t, you will have to tie the cord and get the puppy breathing.
Tying the cord is a simple procedure in which heavy -duty thread may be used. Approximately one inch from the belly of the puppy, tie one knot around the cord using the thread. Then moving away from the puppy another half inch, tie a second knot. Stretch the cord with your fingers and cut between the knots.

I cut the cord with a scissor about 1-2 inches away from the puppy. If it bleeds a lot hold pressure on the end until it stops. If you want you can take some thread and tie it around the end so it does not bleed but that is really not necessary. Only if there is a rare problem does that need doing. Plus it can make the mother want to pull to much on it to clean it off. I try not to let the mother (dam) chew off cords because it can cause damage such as umbilical hernias. I do not worry about that it she has though, just try not to let the abdomen by the cord get to much stress from pulling etc.

When the pup comes out it will be in a sack, usually greenish in col or. the mother will break the sack and usually clean the pup and chew the cord. Make sure you have a whelping area for her to have the pups or you may have puppies being delivered everywhere...... Find a place she can feel secure and confine her to this area if you cannot watch her........
PROBLEMS: The pup should be out shortly after the sack breaks if it doesn't or if the mother does not want to do her job or becomes tired in the process'. Have your vets as well as an emergency number on hand. If pup is delivered and mother does not cut cord. Have thread handy and tie off the cord tightly about 3/4 to one inch from the body then cut the cord on the side away from the body the thread is to stop bleeding..... cut off excess thread then in a few days cord will dry up and fall off on its own. you can also get some good information on

Hello
I breed bichons and if this is the first litter as I suspect then care needs to be taken.
The mother should chew off the cord, however in first litters this is sometimes not done and YOU have to intervene.
Have a sharp pair of scissors at hand that are sterilised, dont use dettol use Miltons as phenols can affect dogs.
let mum deliver pup and then if she isnt breaking sac you do it and tear back over the head, using an aspirator, expel any mucus from airways then once the cord has turned white usually after 1-2 ins then cut it 1inch away from stomach
DONOT tug the pup out from vaginal canal or tug that cord it will give puppy a hernia which will need to be repaired surgically at some later stage.
then leave alone and present pup to mums face so she can smell it then place onto a teat.

Give the new Mom a little water to drink. Make her comfortable as possible and she'll take care of the rest---umbillical cords and all.

Don't sweat it. The mother can do all of the work... You just stay by her and take away the dead pups, if they have black gooey stuff all over them, they are probably dead... be sure to make sure! I have seen some live if they are black. To see iof they are alive take it into a towel and push its upper throught very lightly and see if it squeeks. The mother can chew the cord... she may need help getting them out of the sacks!

We used to raise dogs. What we used to do is take a bottle of iodine, put the mouth of the bottle round the cord, all the way up against the belly, and wiggle the bottle to get the iodine all over it... if I were you, I'd call my vet first, though. If you can do this, the iodine will dry the cord up faster and repel flies as well. :-)

My dog took care of the pups, and I cleaned up the mess she left all over the floor.
Pretty simple.
