There is a prophetic statement told by prophet Muhammad where he ordered Muslims to KILL anyone who leaves Islam?
(1) Was there a reason for prophet Muhammed to give that order?
(2) With all his wonderful teachings, why prophet Muhamemd tried to protect Islam by such horrible way?

The Quran stated:
"Those who believe,then disbelieve,then believe again,then disbelief,and then increase in their disbelief,Allah will never forgive them nor guide them to the path."
Sura-An-Nisa 4:137
This verses clearly shows that multiple apostacy is possible.If the apostacies were killed,how can they convert back to Islam?
Prphet Muhammad once said:"If any of my Hadith,contradict the Quran,then you must follow the Quran"
These are the people that were NOT killed for leaving Islam:
1.Ummu Habibah husband
2.A bunch of people who left Islam when Muhammad declared he rised up to the heaven(Isra Al-Mi'raj)
3.Musailimah Al Kazzab.If you want to know,Muhammad doesn't even care about Musailimah Al Kazzab when he knows that he had left Islam.Musailimah was killed in the order of Caliph Abu Bakar because he went war against Islam,not because he left Islam.

Bukhari quantity 9, e book 80 4, selection 57, Narrated Ikrima, "some atheists have been dropped at Ali and he burnt them. the information of this adventure, reached Ibn Abbas who reported, "If I have been in his place, i would not have burnt them, as Allah's messenger forbade it, asserting, "do no longer punish everyone with Allah's punishment (fireplace)." i'd have killed them in accordance to the fact of Allah's Messenger, "Whoever replaced his Islamic faith, then kill him."

Neither God nor Mohammed ordered death for apostasy. Its not in the Quran or in any reliable hadith. There is no compulsion in religion. You are free to believe or not. Those that take matters into their own hands regarding apostates are not acting in accordance with Islam and God will deal with them later.
