i am taking a course of Paludrine & Avlocar malaraia tablets as i went to india for a holiday.

you take 2 per day and 4 (2 big, 2 little) on a saturday. friday i forgot to take the 2...so saturday morning i took them and then took the 4 i was supposed to - later on during saturday.

last night (saturday) - the side of my neck/face & ear became really swollen and i panicked like crazy...it has gone down a little this morning..but i am worried. could this be a side effect of the tablets..and should i stop taking them now...got one week of a 6 week course to go. any advice or comments would really be appreciated. thank you very much.

I couldn't think of any side effect from either drug that fitted. I therefore checked the data sheets, again nothing similar. This suggests it is an unrelated problem. In fact it sounds very like mumps! I suggest you see your GP.

maleria can not actually be provented. maleria tablets simply slow the process. you should never double ur dose because u forgot to take them. potentially with other medicines this could be fatal. you should finish your course of tablets but first give urself a break to feel better. the best provention would for maleria is plenty garlic. eat a raw clove each night and use repelent spray on ur body. you might smell like garlic but its a lot better than maleria considering that there is no cure. mosquitos hate garlic as it sits in blood. some people claim they are allergic to garlic but this is impossible as garlic is a natural antibiotic.
hope this helps, i went to zimbabwe recently and used the garlic method and never got bitten once. consult ur gp if ur problems get worse. keep well.

Paludrine can sometimes cause cause nausea or mouth ulcers. Avloclor can cause nausea too, and also blurred vision and rashes. The cause of your swelling could well be a reaction to a mosquito bite, so you should, of course, continue to take your medicine.

YOU get a slight touch of malaria but you get better
then when the tablets get fully into your system then you are immunised against malaria
