Hi, I am 40 years old, 5 11, and weigh 175 lb, pretty good looking, however, I want to grow big muscles. I do not mean HUGE, but I guess bigger. Am I too late at age of 40 ? I see many older people with nice big muscles, but they have been working out since teen or something. I have been working out all my life, but not so much weight lifting like those who do it like part of life religiously. I just think its so boring, rather play team sports or Martial Arts or some activity....but indeed weight lifting is not a bad thing.

muscle size is determined by the diet, resistance training only provides the stimulus for growth. 40 yo is far from too old to increase muscle mass most elite weightlifters and bodybuilders do not peak until the late 30's.

the diet plays a much bigger role than does training, going to the gym and training hard is easy. eating 5-6 meals a day 7 days a week for several years is not. and that is why most people never see the results that they desire from resistance training. with the right diet and properly designed training program you could easily be 200 lbs in single digit body fat by 42. a properly designed resistance training is far from boring. training intensity, rep ranges, training loads, exercises, etc. are all cycled intentionally to optimize results.

Although age matters, being 40 is not too old. I personally know people who did not start lifting until they were in their 60's and made significant improvements in muscularity and strength by doing so. Also, weightlifting has other benefits other than just improvements in strength.

A good book to look into is "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips. It has a lot of "real" people who have gotten into the best shape of their lives at any age. There's even a website www.bodyforlife.com that can give you a few pointers.

Hope it helps you out.

umm... i don't think it's too late to start weight lifting at the age of 40 but it's just better if you lifted weights when you were in high school or college or sumthin. b/c at the age of 40 most of the people get hurt more and there bones are more fragile so it's more dangerous for them ....

You'll be fine, but get a personal trainer to help you get started in the right direction and avoid injuries and common pitfalls.
