I'm specifically talking about morality in the United States.

Nah, they don't include that. At that time, sadly, it was totally acceptable. A little hush hush but, not many people complained about it. By a decline in morals, most people mean sex. When you hear the word moral, think automatically of the word sex because that is what most people are talking about. In a way, it's true. It's good that certain things are in the ZwxW (women's health issues, civil rights, etc) but, not much is left to imagination anymore. I take my hat off to anyone raising children nowadays. It has to be hard explaining to little Susie that it's not right to not wear undies because Britney Spears doesn't. I'm an adult and I get embarassed by all the sex on TV all the time. I really can't imagine how confusing it is to grow up with all the sex that saturates pop culture today.

Weird Darryl makes the point the best.
People seem to like to fantasize about and romanticize the "good old days." They like to think everything is much worse now.
The only way they can do this is by totally disregarding any history they happen across.
Even sex, just read up on sex scandals or cummunes in the late 1800's USA

The Good Old Days Never Existed!

Read History!

Choose Reality!

by the way, w. darryl's quote is a paraphrase of "People hear what they want to hear, and disregard the rest." It is from the 1970 Simon and Garfield's "Boxer" song.

I doubt they think lynchings in the 20s thru 50s were moral. I doubt they'd consider them moral during any time period... unless they were included in the OT, of course, and then they will undoubtedly consider lynchings "just a part of the times" and no longer applicable after the NT, so no big deal.

But yeah, I get what you're saying... if now is WORSE than before, was "before" then "so much better" in comparison?

Ha, if you think that lynching is immoral, look at the early Christian groups that followed the Old Testament and edicts for stoning in cases of adultery and homosexuality (fortunately not so bad in the U.S., though imprisonment continued for homosexuality to the 1970s)

I'd say that modern life has improved our sense of morality. Live and let live, and real democracy have given us breathing space. Human nature hasn't changed, but society has improved.

Because most people can't think back five years let along decades or centuries -- -- -- and definitions of what is moral shift frequently. Biblical tradition suggests that Mary was fifteen and Joseph was thirty, by modern terms the mother of Jesus was a teen age slut and his (step) father was a child molester!!!!

Peace...

No they don't. Are you an idiot? The statement that morality is in the decline doesn't mean all things in the past have been moral.

Not to mention the other racism towards Mexicans and the dawn of the War on Drugs (ie, War on vulnerable people)

Concidering the time frame you mentioned and the great influence of lack of laws, I'd say yes.

Why do idiots state a moral or intellectual idea and then assume that they have license to ask idiotic and non related questions?

People who say that we are no longer a moral nation are talking about sexual morality. And they are right.
